I own a Commodore PC-40 (not III) too. Which BIOS do you have? 3.01? I have 2.xx that doesn't support 1.44MB drives.
Also I am looking for the matching manual and orginal disks. Any idea where to get it?

Reentered post, got lost somehow.
Yes the bios is 3.01a I think and it only support's 720kb drives not 1.44mb ones.
No idea's about where to get the manual or disks, I'd like to get my hands on them too, atm the drive has ms-dos 6.22 that I managed to get on there via some tinkering.
